Julia Letlow and John Fleming Advance in Louisiana GOP Senate Primary

Representative Julia Letlow and Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming will face off in a runoff following the Senate Republican primary in Louisiana. This outcome removes incumbent GOP Senator Bill Cassidy from the race, according to CBS News projections. Cassidy, aged 68, had been among the seven Republican senators who voted to convict former President Donald Trump during his impeachment trial post the January 6 Capitol attack in 2021. Despite his efforts to collaborate with the administration in recent years, President Trump endorsed Letlow in January, urging her to challenge Cassidy.

Trump’s Endorsement and Criticism

In a statement released on Truth Social, the former president congratulated Letlow for her remarkable performance in the race, highlighting her achievement of unseating an incumbent senator with record-setting numbers. He praised Letlow, describing her as “a fantastic person” and predicting her success as a senator for the people of Louisiana. Trump, who claims to have contributed to Louisiana’s prosperity with his energy policies, further criticized Cassidy for misrepresenting his relationship with him, accusing Cassidy of unjustly leveraging that connection for electoral success.

Cassidy’s Response and Letlow’s Advocacy

Speaking to his supporters, Cassidy emphasized the importance of focusing on the welfare of Americans and defending constitutional values rather than centering politics around any individual. Letlow, in her address to supporters, hailed Trump as the best president the country has endured and criticized Cassidy for his perceived lack of loyalty to the GOP.

The Runoff and Political Dynamics

CBS News projects the runoff between Letlow and Fleming, with Letlow having highlighted her endorsement from Trump. Conversely, Fleming, who served during Trump’s first administration, expressed his stance as the sole conservative MAGA Republican in the race. Cassidy has been at odds with Trump’s administration, despite key support for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as HHS Secretary and opposing certain health policy changes.

Campaign Positions and Accusations

While Letlow challenged Cassidy’s conservative credentials, citing Cassidy’s votes and broken stances with GOP norms, Cassidy countered by questioning Letlow’s conservative integrity due to past comments supporting DEI programs. Fleming also reiterated Letlow’s previous support for DEI.

Thune and Romney Weigh In

Senate Majority Leader John Thune emphasized Cassidy’s contributions to the Senate and the support from the National Republican Senatorial Committee for incumbents, though acknowledging the voters’ control in Louisiana’s decision-making process. Former GOP Senator Mitt Romney praised Cassidy as a loss for the country, citing his intellectual and ethical contributions.

Democratic Nominee and Election Outlook

In the Democratic primary, Jamie Davis secured the nomination, surpassing his rivals, Nick Albares and Gary Crockett. Despite Davis’s success, Louisiana remains heavily Republican, where Trump won 60% of the vote in 2024. The GOP primary winner is highly likely to capture the Senate seat in November’s general election.

Election Processes Amidst Legal Challenges

Governor Jeff Landry suspended the state’s House primaries following a Supreme Court decision invalidating Louisiana’s congressional map. However, Senate primaries continued as scheduled, affecting the political landscape and anticipation ahead of the election cycle.
