On Sunday, Louisiana State University (LSU) initiated a plan to sign tight end Dae’Quan Wright. Wright spent his summer with the Cleveland Browns before the decision to return to college football.
The move to sign Wright sparked controversy for two main reasons. Firstly, he transitioned from the NFL back to college. Secondly, he previously played for Lane Kiffin, now LSU’s head coach, at Ole Miss last season. The Southeastern Conference (SEC) has rules against intraconference transfers unless they occur during a specific spring transfer window.
LSU argues that Wright’s move doesn’t violate this rule, stating that he isn’t transferring directly from Ole Miss but from the Browns. Despite this, rival SEC schools demand penalties for LSU’s attempt to navigate around the regulations.
On Monday, LSU reinforced this strategy by securing another former Ole Miss player who experienced NFL play over the summer. According to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals, defensive lineman Zxavian Harris plans to join the Tigers. Harris, who contributed 58 tackles and three sacks at Ole Miss last season, spent time with the New Orleans Saints but was waived on August 8.
According to On3, other SEC schools are urging the conference to reprimand LSU for this maneuver. Despite this, LSU intends to retain Wright for the upcoming season, placing him alongside Harris in similar circumstances.
Earlier this month, Kiffin expressed his stance that players granted a fifth year of eligibility should have freedom in choosing their next program. “These kids, if they get a fifth year, they should be able to go wherever they want,” Kiffin stated. “Any conference. Anywhere. Because they didn’t have a chance. And there’s going to be places that don’t want them back because they’re full or they don’t need that position or there’s new coaches there. It would be a shame to limit these kids to where they go back to, NCAA or conferences.”
LSU is challenging the SEC regulations this season with their new recruitment tactics, clearly prepared for a forthcoming clash.
