Danny Moscoso’s Game-Winning Kick Against West Aurora

16 hours ago 0

Danny Moscoso is accustomed to high-pressure situations. The senior kicker for South Elgin, normally a goalkeeper for the boys’ soccer team, ventured into football over the summer. His skill in handling tense moments in soccer prepared him for similar scenarios in football.

Facing intense pressure Friday night, Moscoso executed a crucial play. With four seconds left, he kicked a 32-yard field goal securing a 29-27 victory over West Aurora. This was his first successful field goal in a game. This achievement clinched the Upstate Eight West title for South Elgin.

South Elgin’s performance further showcased their strengths. Oliver Johnston and Carter McDonald both threw touchdown passes. Lamari Smith racked up 158 yards and scored a touchdown over 23 carries. Diesel Fecarotta’s blocked punt transformed into a touchdown. Semaj Collier caught nine passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.

West Aurora had Tyler Fecht completing five passes, including touchdowns to Richard Bell Jr. and Brendon Salach, along with catching an 11-yard touchdown from Bell via a trick play. Michael Williams added 81 yards and a touchdown in rushing.

The critical decision at the end gave South Elgin three options. They could attempt a touchdown, allow regular kicker Jeffrey Espana to attempt the field goal, or let Moscoso make the kick. Coach Pat Pistorio praised Moscoso’s long-distance kicking abilities, noting his competitive nature and his assurance to deliver under pressure.

“In terms of long-distance kicks, Danny did a nice job showing his leg,” coach Pistorio remarked. “He had that look in his eyes and reassured me that he’s got it.”

Despite losing a two-touchdown lead, South Elgin regained momentum. With 1:18 left in the fourth quarter, McDonald connected with Collier for a 23-yard touchdown, but a failed 2-point conversion left them short. They successfully recovered an onside kick, positioning them for the decisive play.

Transitioning rapidly from quarterback to holder, McDonald ensured the snap went smoothly for Moscoso’s attempt. Moscoso’s preparation since July paid off as he embraced the opportunity calmly.

“You just have to be ready at all times. I was a little nervous, but it happens,” Moscoso shared. “I thought about all the practices and sacrifices I made.”

His teammates showed significant support, appreciating his successful kick.

“They were grateful I had this opportunity and made the game-winning kick. They support me a lot,” Moscoso said.

The Storm now stands on the brink of a conference title, requiring one more victory over Elgin. The dramatic conclusion to the game epitomized the thrilling nature of high school sports.

“That was a great game,” Pistorio commented. “I’m excited to see our program grow. This is why we do this.”
