Maine Democrats Select New Candidate Following Primary Shift

1 month ago 0

In Bangor, Maine, the Democratic Party has chosen Troy Jackson as their new Senate candidate. This decision follows the withdrawal of Graham Platner, prompting a search for a replacement candidate.

Jackson aims to win over supporters of his predecessor to challenge Senator Susan Collins. Previously allied with Platner, Jackson withdrew his support following allegations against Platner, a situation mirrored by many Democrats.

Initially, Jackson and Platner supported each other’s campaigns; Jackson ran for governor, while Platner aimed for the Senate. Despite various controversies, Jackson stood by Platner until a sexual assault allegation ended Platner’s campaign.

Jackson now needs to connect with Platner’s supporters to have a chance against Collins. Over the weekend, he appeared to re-engage with Platner’s base, understanding the importance of progressive politics.

I wish nothing would have happened with Graham,” Jackson stated in Belfast, Maine, where Platner had strong support. “I just didn’t want to see all these people that are looking for somebody to fight for them go away once again broken and hopeless.

National Republicans have criticized Jackson’s attempt to gain Platner’s supporters. A spokesperson from the National Republican Senatorial Committee accused Jackson of capitalizing on the scandal.

Before taking over as nominee, Jackson and Platner shared campaign trails and endorsed each other. Platner praised Jackson’s alignment on labor issues, highlighting their common policies.

Last month, as allegations surfaced, Jackson joined other Democrats in urging Platner to step down. Jackson issued a statement emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations, advocating for accountability.

Jackson has faced scrutiny over his own past and conduct. He was involved in an incident where he was alleged to have thrown a water bottle in the Senate, and an old police record surfaced involving him in an altercation.

Senator Collins refrained from commenting on Jackson’s police record, stating the issue was his to address, noting reports of Jackson’s difficulty managing his temper.

There was an effort urging Platner to run as a write-in candidate. However, he missed the deadline to register. Advocates argue his candidacy would challenge the Democratic establishment and leverage Maine’s ranked-choice voting for Jackson.
