Mario Hezonja’s Return to the NBA with Cleveland Cavaliers

Mario Hezonja, once a celebrated NBA lottery pick, has made a rare return to the league after spending six years overseas. The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed the 31-year-old Croatian to a one-year contract valued at $2.8 million, marking his first NBA appearance since 2020.

Hezonja was initially drafted fifth overall by the Orlando Magic in 2015. Entering the league with substantial expectations, he struggled to deliver consistent performances. Over five seasons, he played for Orlando, New York, and Portland, averaging 6.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists across 330 games.

Instead of fading into obscurity, Hezonja relocated to Europe to rejuvenate his career. During his time with Real Madrid, he became one of the continent’s standout wings. He won a EuroLeague championship and achieved MVP honors in Spain’s Liga Endesa last season.

For the Cavaliers, signing Hezonja presents a minimal-risk move with the potential for considerable benefits. As a 6-foot-8 wing, he has gained valuable experience competing at top levels outside the NBA. Should he fail to make an impact, the cost for Cleveland remains low, but if his European form translates well, this acquisition might prove to be a notable offseason bargain.
