Marist Falls Short in State Semifinal Despite Strong Performance from Lexi Kyros

3 weeks ago 0

Despite a challenging day with the bat, Marist junior Lexi Kyros displayed her defensive prowess in a crucial Class 4A state semifinal. The Michigan commit, playing on a significant stage, showcased her skills. Within moments, she eliminated one Lincoln-Way West runner at home plate and caught another attempting to steal second.

Kyros expressed her enthusiasm for making defensive plays, stating, “As long as I can keep us throwing the least amount of pitches, it helps the team. I want everything for this team.”

Although Marist lost to Lincoln-Way West 2-1 in the state semifinal at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex, Kyros focused on the positives. Key players for Marist included Ellie Holmstrom, Maddie Rogers, and Layla Peters, each with two hits, while Wisconsin commit Soleil Tate struck out six.

For Lincoln-Way West, Abby Brueggmann earned the win, striking out four and leaving eight runners stranded. Reese Forsythe contributed with a critical triple, and NC State recruit Reese Rourke stole home.

Marist is set to face Oswego in the third-place game, not the position they hoped for, but an improvement from last season when they didn’t make it to state.

Mary Fortner displayed strong defense by tagging out Lincoln-Way West’s Molly Finn at second base. Despite the loss, making it to state was significant for the team according to Kyros, as last season ended earlier than hoped.

Brueggmann’s pitching wasn’t confusing for Marist, but they struggled with runners in scoring positions. Their only run came in the fourth inning with a double by Holmstrom and a squeeze bunt by Alia Rowles.

Reflecting on past victories, Marist had previously defeated Lincoln-Way West, but during Friday’s game, conditions had changed. “We left too many girls on base,” Kyros noted, despite her defensive successes that turned the game’s momentum. Kyros made crucial plays, including a flip to Tate at home plate and catching a runner stealing.

Maddie Rogers commended Kyros as a leader and team player, highlighting her significance to Marist’s defense. Marist coach Colleen Phelan echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Kyros’s preparedness and contribution to keeping opposing teams in check.

Kyros expressed a desire to improve and achieve more in the future, aiming for greater performance next year.
