In Maryland, a high school employee faces new criminal charges for recording female students in a school changing room. James Mulhern III, linked to Walter Johnson High School in Montgomery County, has 12 counts of minor abuse against him. Investigators found video evidence of 12 students in various stages of undress.
The investigation began on April 7 when students discovered a video camera in the theater control booth. A student reviewed the camera’s memory card, revealing videos from the girls’ changing room, which led to notifying school officials.
Police reported footage of a male adult placing the camera inside the changing room before leaving. The school’s principal identified Mulhern, a media services technician, as the man in the footage.
Search warrants were carried out at the school and Mulhern’s residence, yielding valuable evidence, including several electronic devices. Authorities identified eight additional victims and traced videos back to 2015, expanding the case beyond the initially identified victims.
Mulhern appeared in court for his additional charges, where he was released on a $100,000 unsecured bond. He is required to stay away from the school and have supervised contact with his minor son.
Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy noted increased concerns over newly discovered evidence. Each count of minor abuse could lead to a 25-year prison sentence, putting Mulhern at risk of up to 300 years in prison.
