President Trump is using the slow counting of mail ballots in California to question election outcomes he dislikes, despite no evidence of widespread fraud.
Recently, he has described the rise of a candidate for Los Angeles mayor as a Democratic scam. This has been part of his ongoing effort to undermine confidence in elections.
In one of America’s most liberal cities, Trump considers any Democratic win inherently suspicious.
“Not possible for Spencer Pratt to have lost the L.A. runoffs after the big lead he had,” Trump posted on social media. “3rd World Nation.”
Spencer Pratt, a reality TV personality and Trump-endorsed Republican, initially led the race against Nithya Raman, a progressive city councilwoman. This was for the second spot in the upcoming mayoral runoff. The lead was only behind the incumbent, Mayor Karen Bass, a Democrat.
Election officials continued to count late-arriving mail ballots, mostly from Democrats, which allowed Raman to overtake Pratt. Such initial Republican leads are known as the “red mirage.” However, Trump, as with his 2020 defeat, framed the delayed count as proof of theft.
By alleging a Democratic tactic, Trump aims to weaken trust in elections. This also gives an insight into how he might respond to any unfavorable outcomes for his party in upcoming congressional elections.
Trump is eager to restrict Democrats from voting by mail, suggesting without evidence that this voting method is suspect.
In March, speaking to Republican lawmakers, he urged them to pass strict voter identification laws focused on mail ballots to maintain their majority.
