Mason Netcel’s Journey to Success

1 month ago 0

Mason Netcel of St. Charles North has always shown great potential. Called up to varsity during his freshman year, he committed to Division I Indiana State last September, solidifying his reputation. However, managing setbacks was a challenge.

This season, Netcel focused on improving his mindset, which helped elevate his performance. He shared, “I’m happier with the mental side than the stats. My main goal this year was to be more positive and not let things affect me as much.” He admitted that staying positive can be difficult, yet he is proud of his progress.

A growing focus on mental resilience in sports has been crucial for Netcel. “It was huge for me. As a kid, striking out made me fume,” Netcel confessed. “Learning to handle emotions without bringing them onto the field is significant.”

Coach Todd Genke praised Netcel’s progress. “He’s grown a lot. We’ve relied on him for leadership, and he’s matured into the role. He’s special, often the most talented on the field. He’s improved in handling challenges.” During a conference game, Netcel showed his skill, throwing to first base for an out and making a leaping catch against rivals.

“That’s part of maturing. I’m proud of his development as both a player and person,” Genke noted, reflecting on the pressures Netcel faces, given his talent and scholarship. “People have high expectations, which can be burdensome. His maturity is evident.”

Netcel’s final season has been impressive, with a .320 batting average, 31 runs, 13 doubles, five homers, and 19 RBIs. His .492 on-base percentage is supported by 22 walks and being hit by pitches 11 times. “He’s a hard worker. Talent, coachability, drive, and work ethic can lead to special achievements,” Genke commented, adding that Netcel is also a great teammate.

Despite his success, the recruitment process was tough for Netcel. “It stunk initially,” he said. Offers were limited, but after performing well at Indiana State’s camp, he received an offer, which he accepted wholeheartedly. “No other options were available, and I loved the sport,” Netcel said. “I fit in well and wanted to be there.”

Looking ahead, Netcel aims for a strong postseason with his team. “We have a positive vibe going into the playoffs. I feel we can make a strong run.”
