Polls have closed in Massachusetts, marking a significant political clash within the Democratic Party between progressive forces and centrist ideals. The primary race features veteran Sen. Ed Markey, aged 80, who represents the progressive wing, competing against the younger and more moderate Rep. Seth Moulton, aged 47. Unlike similar races nationwide, progressives align with Markey here.
Markey, after decades in the House, secured a Senate seat in 2013. He’s endorsed by progressive heavyweights like Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Bernie Sanders, alongside Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Markey champions progressive policies such as the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, a Trans Bill of Rights, taxing billionaires, and cutting military expenditure.
Moulton, a Marine Corps veteran, has backing from Gov. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey and the Boston Globe. His campaign emphasizes generational shift, questioning age limits in political offices. During the final debate, Moulton stated, “I served with amazing leaders at a young age in the Marines, but they can’t run for Congress.”
In their debate, Markey displayed confidence, asserting his vigor: “I’m more energized than ever.” Moulton criticized Markey’s awareness of tech tools like A.I., questioning his knowledge, while Markey struggled to clarify his usage of tech platforms.
Both candidates share views on abolishing ICE and inclusivity in sports but diverged when Moulton apologized for remarks about female sports safety.
Markey leads in polls and fundraising efforts, positioning him as the primary’s favorite. The winner will likely face Republican John Deaton in the general election.
Meanwhile, six candidates vie for the Democratic nomination in the 6th Congressional District to replace Moulton. Notables include Dan Koh, who boasts endorsements from President Joe Biden and VP Kamala Harris. The Democratic winner will encounter Republican Micah Q. Jones, running unopposed.
Prominent incumbents, like House Minority Whip Katherine Clark and Reps. Stephen Lynch and Richard Neal, face left-wing primary challenges. Three-term Rep. Jake Auchincloss also joins the list of those facing contenders.
The Republican governorship nomination sees Mike Minogue opposing Briani Shortsleeve. Democrats dominate the state’s political landscape, yet Republicans aim to challenge Democratic Gov. Maura Healey.
Significant changes loom as Massachusetts voters consider an all-party primary ballot initiative that could reshape future electoral systems by advancing top vote-getters, bypassing party limitations.
