Mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Trump held a significant meeting in New York City on Monday, marking their third encounter and the first at Gracie Mansion. This meeting follows Mamdani’s previous visits to the White House in November and February, shortly after his election.
A major topic during their discussions was the proposed housing project in Queens. Mamdani seeks federal aid amounting to billions for this initiative. At earlier meetings, he presented a mock-up of a newspaper headline stating “Trump To City: Let’s Build,” emphasizing the importance of the project.
Affordable housing remained a key topic during Monday’s meeting, though details were scarce. The mayor and president also touched on immigration issues, opting not to provide specifics. The leaders expressed their intent to continue discussions focused on improving life for New Yorkers, a recurring theme in their meetings.
At a joint press conference following their meeting, Mamdani updated on the Queens housing proposal. The plan involves constructing what could become the world’s largest rail deck over Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard in Queens. This site would then host 12,000 housing units. This proposal, originally suggested by former Mayor Bill de Blasio, reignites significant interest.
“We spoke about Sunnyside Yards,” Mamdani noted. “We agreed to enhance conversations between City Hall and the White House teams on this matter. We’re discussing 12,000 homes and 30,000 job opportunities.”
President Trump acknowledged the project’s federal dependencies. “It’s a very federal-oriented job with numerous necessary approvals and likely federal funding,” he stated. He also praised its location as advantageous.
Carlo Scissura, who served on the initial Sunnyside Yards task force, has been dedicated to realizing this development for over a decade. “Their collaboration is commendable,” Scissura remarked. He highlighted the project’s potential impact on over 200 acres that could invigorate the area.
Not everyone supports the plan, though. City Councilwoman Julie Won, whose district includes the rail yard, questioned the allocation of resources. “Shouldn’t we solve the immediate housing and healthcare crises first?” she asked, expressing concerns about the long-term timeline.
The timing of Mamdani and Trump’s meeting coincided with the United Nations General Assembly. President Trump is scheduled to speak about global issues, including the conflict with Iran and peace efforts in Gaza. He will meet with leaders from the UK, Japan, Venezuela, and Ukraine, though a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was missed due to scheduling conflicts.
