Meteorite Strikes New Jersey Home, Contributes to Science

On July 16, 2024, an unexpected cosmic event occurred when a meteorite struck a house in Hillsborough, New Jersey. This incident provided valuable information to scientists, shedding light on the composition of an unusual asteroid.

At 11:17 a.m. on that day, observers in areas as distant as Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania reported seeing an asteroid streak through the New York City sky. Witnesses described the event’s fireball and a sonic boom similar to thunder. NASA initially assessed that the object, approximately a foot in length, would disintegrate completely in Earth’s atmosphere.

Contrary to NASA’s expectation, the meteorite impacted a New Jersey home. A man working in his home office experienced a sudden disturbance. “I heard an immense crash and felt the house shake,” he recounted, likening it to his kitchen cabinets collapsing abruptly.

Upon investigation, the man discovered a hole in the ceiling above his bed. The interior of the house was filled with a foul odor resembling rotten eggs mingled with fine dust. Black soot covered the surfaces, and when he looked at his pillow, he discovered several black rocks.
