Mexico City will increase security measures and limit access for the upcoming World Cup match between Mexico and England. This follows a tragic incident during celebrations for Mexico’s victory over Ecuador, where four people died due to asphyxiation and cardiac arrest.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada announced these precautions to ensure spectator safety. Mexican fans have been gathering in large numbers to watch the games since they were priced out of stadiums due to high ticket costs. Authorities had previously pledged to ensure safety for spectators, addressing concerns raised after a cartel-related attack in February.
Brugada emphasized that access to popular spots like the Monument of Independence and the Zócalo will have limited capacity on Sunday to prevent overcrowding.
The Secretary of Public Security, Pablo Vázquez, stated that 25,000 people could access the Angel monument. Fans who missed out will be guided to areas along Paseo de la Reforma, equipped with screens to watch the match.
Security measures include deploying 6,000 officers along Paseo de la Reforma, double the previous deployment for the Ecuador game. Estadio Azteca will see 7,500 officers, and 3,300 will oversee the Zócalo. Access control measures involve restricting street vendors and delivery drivers and closing Metro and Metrobus lines near critical areas.
The Secretary of Government, César Cravioto, announced a prohibition on the street sale of alcoholic beverages, with consumption allowed only in designated establishments. The Secretary of Civil Protection, Myriam Urzúa, warned against participating in dangerous crowd games, urging fans to maintain safety.
Under heavy security, the England team arrived in the Santa Fe area of Mexico City without a repeat of the massive gatherings seen in prior matches. Fans were present to welcome the team, but no disruptions occurred.
