Michael J. Fox shares his journey with Parkinson’s disease and its effects on him and his family.
During the Social Impact Summit, hosted by The Hollywood Reporter and the Social Impact Fund, Fox explained his decision to publicly disclose his Parkinson’s diagnosis. The announcement, made during the third season of Spin City, deeply affected his family, particularly his wife, Tracy Pollan.
Fox emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by his wife, saying, “It was hell on Tracy. She still finds it tough because it constantly changes.” He stressed the importance of publicizing his condition, stating, “I needed to normalize it all the time.”
Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at 29 and chose to keep it private until 1998. After retiring from acting, he dedicated his efforts to advocacy, founding the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000. This organization aims to find a cure for Parkinson’s and has amassed over $3 billion for research.
“It’s been the best state for Parkinson’s research ever,” said Deborah W. Brooks, Co-Founder and CEO of the foundation.
Brooks highlighted the foundation’s global impact, enabling scientific progress in Parkinson’s research. Fox’s determination and transparency empower patients and reduce stigma surrounding the disease.
Fox’s influence extends beyond funding, offering hope for early detection of Parkinson’s symptoms. Brooks credits Fox’s continued visibility with inspiring change and guiding the foundation’s priorities.
Although Fox initially retired from acting, he returned to the screen, earning an Emmy nomination for his role in Shrinking, where he portrayed a patient with Parkinson’s. His interactions with other actors, including Harrison Ford, demonstrated his dedication to sharing his experiences and raising awareness.
At the Third Annual Social Impact Summit, Fox alongside Brooks, received an award for their organization’s contribution to philanthropy. The Michael J. Fox Foundation continues to drive forward initiatives, cementing its impact on research and advocacy.
