Michigan’s Democratic Senate nominee, Abdul El-Sayed, recently compared his policy positions to the teachings of Jesus Christ. During a May episode of the Progressive Christians Podcast, El-Sayed discussed how his Muslim faith influences his Senate campaign policies.
Rev. Blair Stowe, one of the podcast’s hosts, mentioned that policies advocated by progressive candidates, such as Medicare for all and anti-war stances, appear similar to the teachings of Jesus from a Christian perspective.
“And yet, those platforms and those policies are being named radical. And we know that you have been referred to as a radical,” Stowe said. “So what do you think about that title, that these things that are, that seem to come very easily from the Christian faith that are shared in the Muslim faith? Like, why is that considered so radical?”
El-Sayed responded by stating, “Well, you know, Jesus, peace and blessings be upon him, was considered radical in his time too. And there is a radical nature to being willing to stand forthright in a time of corruption.” He added that popularity and current trends do not define truth.
El-Sayed, who recently won the Michigan Democratic Senate nomination, faces a significant challenge. Republicans see Michigan as a potential gain for their slim Senate majority. Former Rep. Mike Rogers, who lost narrowly in 2024, provides competition for El-Sayed.
Both candidates have incorporated faith into their political strategies. A National Republican Senatorial Committee spokeswoman, Bernadette Breslin, criticized El-Sayed for his comments, stating, “Abdul El-Sayed is unfit to represent Michigan, and he proves it every time he attacks other faiths.”
El-Sayed also addressed criticisms of his faith on the “I’ve Had It” podcast, suggesting Rogers ignored Christianity’s core teachings. “He’s going to hide behind this simulacrum of faith,” El-Sayed stated, criticizing Rogers for not adhering to Christian teachings that oppose the power and wealth of the elite.
