A Minnesota woman linked to the “Feeding Our Future” scandal faces new charges related to daycare fraud. Fahima Egeh Mahamud, known for her appearance in a viral video by influencer Nick Shirley, has been charged with wire fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States. Authorities allege she misappropriated funds meant for children’s meals.
Earlier, Mahamud was indicted for her alleged involvement in a $250 million scheme, “Feeding Our Future”. Prosecutors claim she falsely enrolled her Minneapolis daycare, Future Leaders Early Learning, into a federal child nutrition program, reporting fake meal counts to gain funds.
The charges against Mahamud now include a secondary scheme targeting the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). Between October 2022 and December 2025, Mahamud allegedly filed over 13,000 fake claims amounting to around $4.6 million. She is accused of falsely certifying mandatory co-payments collection from families to secure federal reimbursements.
The Future Leaders Early Learning center gained attention in a viral video by Nick Shirley, showcasing empty, Somali-run childcare centers in Minneapolis and discussing fraud allegations. This exposure led to a swift multiagency crackdown during the Trump administration.
Following the video’s release, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) froze about $185 million in federal childcare funding for Minnesota. Additionally, over 2,000 federal agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) were dispatched to the Twin Cities to intensify investigations and enforcement actions.
