Chicago Faces Ankle Monitor Crisis
Chicago is experiencing a serious issue as many alleged criminals on ankle monitors have disappeared. Over 246 participants in the Cook County pre-trial program are currently unaccounted for. These individuals include those charged with severe crimes like murder, sexual assault, and aggravated battery. Former police chief Tom Weitzel has voiced concerns about the security weaknesses within the system.
In addition, a convicted child sex offender in San Diego has vanished after his GPS monitor indicated tampering. Merle Wakefield, aged 69, was working at a location in Rancho Bernardo when his monitor revealed the tamper alert. His supervising company arrived but found his device removed and Wakefield missing. Authorities continue to search for him and have asked for public assistance in reporting sightings.
Concerns Over System Reliability
San Diego County officials have raised alarms on Wakefield’s disappearance. County Supervisor Jim Desmond condemned the state’s lack of communication regarding the issue. Wakefield was on conditional release after convictions for lewd acts and rape. Despite a tamper alert two days ago, his whereabouts are still unknown.
Wakefield’s release faced opposition before execution, especially regarding a transient release instead of a fixed address. Local leaders expressed concern about public safety and monitoring limitations. Poway’s mayor stressed the difficulty posed by a lack of permanent residence for individuals like Wakefield.
State Department and Judicial Decisions
The California Department of State Hospitals emphasized that judicial decisions lead to conditional releases. The department maintains a supervision program involving GPS monitoring and surprise checks. Violation of conditions could result in a return to state facilities.
Nonetheless, community leaders continue to oppose placements within neighborhoods. Calls for reforms, such as audits into the program’s effectiveness and budgeting, have emerged. Senator Brian Jones advocates keeping sexually violent predators in secure settings rather than local communities.
Public Calls for Action
Authorities describe Wakefield as 5’10”, weighing 230 pounds, with brown eyes. The public has been cautioned not to approach but rather to contact law enforcement. Continued community efforts aim to address and rectify these security system inadequacies to protect residents.
