In Mississippi, a Democrat is threatening to overturn historical trends in a predominantly Republican state. A recent poll shows Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith leading Democratic challenger Scott Colom by a narrow margin.
Poll Results
The Wedgewood Polls survey places Hyde-Smith at 52% and Colom at 48%, within the poll’s 4.3-point margin of error. Conducted from October 12 to 14, the survey included 511 likely voters.
This poll result, following Sabato’s Crystal Ball’s adjustment of the race from “Safe Republican” to “Likely Republican,” indicates increased competitiveness even though Hyde-Smith remains ahead.
Electoral Divisions
The poll’s crosstabs reveal a split among the electorate. Colom has strong backing from Black voters, securing 91% of their support, and leads 56% to 44% among voters aged 18 to 29. In contrast, Hyde-Smith garners 78% support from white voters and an overwhelming 88% from those recalling voting for Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Black voters make up 37% of the weighted sample.
Poll Methodology
Wedgewood Polls independently designed and funded the survey. Respondents were gathered through an online panel, screened for voter registration and likelihood to vote, and then weighted by gender, age, race, ethnicity, and education. Margins of error are larger for specific subgroups.
This finding highlights increasing Democratic interest in a Mississippi Senate seat long held by Republicans. The Wall Street Journal noted that Democratic donors have begun to channel funds into the race, identifying Mississippi as a potential target.
Other Candidates and Implications
The poll examined only Hyde-Smith and Colom, while independent Ty Pinkins is also competing on the November 3 ballot. This makes the direct comparison less comprehensive.
If successful, Colom would be the first Democrat elected to the Mississippi Senate since 1982. Although it offers Democrats a rare opportunity, a single poll result within the margin of error is not a definitive indicator of a trend.
