Mychal Threets, host of the revitalized ‘Reading Rainbow’ series, is prioritizing his mental health. Earlier this week, Threets announced on Threads his decision to admit himself to the hospital for treatment.

Expressing his feelings, Threets stated, “I am not okay. Maybe I’ll never be okay. I’m seeking help,” alongside a plan to visit the hospital. He assured his followers, “In this moment I am safe. By God’s grace.” He expressed gratitude towards his friends and supporters, highlighting their importance in his life.

The announcement on Threads received widespread backing. Actress Yvette Nicole Brown suggested he seek immediate help if necessary, quoting, “If you need the help, maybe go tonight, friend.” The news of Threets’ decision prompted many supportive responses from Threads users. One user emphasized the positive impact Threets has on the world, urging him to obtain necessary help. Another commented on the love his followers have for him, many of whom he has not met personally.

Threets has been open about his mental health challenges. He gained attention in 2023 for sharing motivational messages on TikTok and Instagram, amassing a large following. By 2024, he resigned from his librarian position in California, citing mental health struggles. Threets discussed feeling burnt out and having suicidal thoughts.

In 2025, Threets took on the role of host for ‘Reading Rainbow,’ succeeding LeVar Burton. The original series aired on PBS from 1983 to 2006. This commitment marks a significant endeavor for Threets, balancing personal care with professional responsibilities.
