Navy Jets Collide at Air Show, Crew Ejects Safely

All four crew members ejected safely after a collision involving two Navy jets during an air show at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho. The crash, involving EA-18G Growlers from Whidbey Island, occurred during a demonstration. Cmdr. Amelia Umayam from Naval Air Forces confirmed the incident. All crew members are in stable condition, according to base officials.

Kim Sykes, from Silver Wings of Idaho, emphasized the importance of safety. She confirmed no injuries occurred at the base. Videos from spectators showed the parachutes opening as the jets fell. Both aircraft then exploded upon impact. The air show, including scheduled performances by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, was canceled.

The National Weather Service reported good visibility and gusty winds at the time of the crash. Aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti noted the unusual nature of the collision, suggesting that its unique dynamics helped the crews to eject successfully. John Cox, another safety expert, highlighted the narrow margin for error in air show flying.

This incident follows a long history of improving safety in air shows. John Cudahy, of the International Council of Air Shows, pointed to the significant decrease in fatalities over the years. With both crews surviving, investigators have firsthand accounts to aid the investigation led by the Navy.
