The NBA concluded a year-long investigation into Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers, revealing they had circumvented salary cap rules. The Clippers provided off-court endorsement and income opportunities to Leonard through corporate partners Aspiration, Boingo Wireless, Daktronics, and Lockton Insurance. These opportunities were in exchange for Leonard’s business with the team.
The league response was significant. The Clippers face a $30 million fine and must forfeit first-round draft picks from 2029 to 2033. Owner Steve Ballmer received a one-year suspension from team and league activities. Leonard himself was fined $700,000 but avoided contract cancellation or suspension.
A key question after the investigation involved the Clippers-Raptors trade. On ESPN’s SportsCenter, Shams Charania clarified that the trade would proceed as planned. This transaction includes the Clippers receiving multiple first-round picks and other considerations from the Raptors.
Leonard acknowledged his role in the situation, noting the distraction it caused. The union emphasized that Leonard was potentially taken advantage of by his business representative, his uncle, Dennis Robertson. The union aims to protect players from similar situations.
With the investigation concluded, Raptors fans anticipate Leonard’s integration into a team led by Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett, and Immanuel Quickley. The trade arrangement sends Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and several picks from 2027 to 2033 to the Clippers in exchange for Leonard.
In related news, Leonard’s uncle, Dennis Robertson, has been banned from conducting business with any NBA-related entities for five years.
