NBA Player Brandon Clarke’s Tragic Death

The tragic passing of NBA player Brandon Clarke was officially ruled an accidental drug overdose. Clarke, who played for the Memphis Grizzlies, was discovered deceased in his Los Angeles residence on May 11. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner identified the cause as the combined effects of heroin and cocaine.

Authorities located drug paraphernalia at Clarke’s home upon his death. He was 29 years old.

Initially selected in the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019, Clarke’s rights were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. Clarke quickly demonstrated his talent, earning MVP honors in the 2019 NBA Summer League. Born in Vancouver, he became the second non-American to receive the award. Clarke primarily contributed off the bench during his seven seasons with the Grizzlies.

Clarke’s recent season was difficult, as he participated in only two games due to necessary knee surgery. A subsequent calf strain kept him out of most games. Memphis announced in March that while Clarke continued rehabilitation, further healing time was necessary, with an anticipated return the following season.

In April, Clarke faced legal issues in Arkansas. He was arrested on charges including improper passing and trafficking a controlled substance. He was scheduled for a court appearance on May 15.

Clarke shone during his collegiate career at Gonzaga before impacting the Grizzlies. He made the 2019-20 All-Rookie team, averaging 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. Over his career, Clarke averaged 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 20.8 minutes per game across 309 career games.
