Nate and Nelson Rouette, seasoned fishermen from Massachusetts, embarked on a shark fishing venture on Cape Cod with the hope of a notable catch. Their excitement turned to surprise when they reeled in a species uncommon to their waters — a juvenile tiger shark. This species is prevalent in warmer areas like the Caribbean Sea, and its presence off Falmouth, Massachusetts, suggests an alarming indicator of climate change.
The brothers captured the shark late in July, an event Nate found thrilling after hours spent searching for more typical brown sharks. “I saw those horizontal lines and knew it was a tiger shark,” said Nate, also a social media manager for On The Water magazine. He immediately called out to Nelson in excitement, who initially doubted the sighting.
The tiger shark, although young, represents a species that can grow significantly, reaching lengths over 15 feet and weighing up to 1,400 pounds. Known for their diverse diet, these sharks consume fish, crustaceans, birds, and occasionally man-made objects found in their stomachs later. Although more dangerous to humans than most shark species, fatal bites from adults are rare.
John Chisholm, adjunct scientist at the New England Aquarium’s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, noted the unusual sighting of juvenile tiger sharks in northern waters. According to him, global warming has made the North Atlantic more favorable for these sharks. “They might be coming up here because conditions are suitable, with available food and warmer waters. Possibly, it’s becoming a nursery — that is something we will look into,” Chisholm stated.

Tiger sharks are among several species moving northwards as ocean temperatures rise. Other sharks, including great whites, have been noted increasingly off Cape Cod, New Hampshire, and Maine. The increased sightings of great whites have been linked to thriving seal populations they prey upon. The northward shift in other species, like black sea bass, also supports the evidence of warming oceans.
For Nate and Nelson, the unexpected catch was not only an exciting moment but a stark reminder of the changing environmental conditions. Nate reflected on the tiger shark’s presence as an indicator of climate shifts. “People are definitely seeing more species that indicate that,” he remarked.
