The New York Knicks have claimed victory after more than five decades. With training camp underway, the front office faces a crucial decision to finalize the team roster.
The Knicks have signed five seasoned players to temporary contracts for the camp, but there are only one or two spots available on the roster. The team lacks depth in the big-man position behind their starting lineup. One player among the group holds a connection with a significant figure in the organization.
James Wiseman’s Potential Role
NBA insider Marc Stein reported on The Stein Line that James Wiseman shares a previous history with coach Mike Brown. This connection might influence the competition at the camp.
“If Wiseman makes the Knicks’ Opening Night roster, it will cement a reunion for the former No. 2 overall pick with former Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown,” Stein wrote.
Mike Brown is celebrated as the coach who brought a championship to New York City, a title last seen over 50 years ago under Red Holzman. Notably, Brown worked with Wiseman during his initial two years with the Warriors under coach Steve Kerr.
Wiseman’s Fit in the Team
Stein noted that Brown is indeed a fan of Wiseman, and the newly crowned champions seem to need an additional big man behind Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond.
However, Brown’s endorsement alone will not be enough. Wiseman is 25, has the necessary size, but has played only five games in two years. His performance in the camp is crucial to demonstrate his current capability.
Competitors for Roster Spots
The pressure increases with other players vying for spots. Bruce Brown, John Konchar, and Ochai Agbaji each bring valuable skills. The October cuts will be tough as none of these players appear to be mere additions.
Drew Eubanks represents a safer choice, while Wiseman offers a riskier option. With Towns and Drummond leading the team, selecting stability might be preferable, yet Brown’s familiarity with Wiseman is noteworthy.
