The New York Knicks made a historic comeback, overcoming a 29-point deficit to defeat the San Antonio Spurs 107-106. This victory puts them on the brink of their first championship since 1973, leading the NBA Finals 3-1.
OG Anunoby’s decisive tip-in of Jalen Brunson’s missed 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left sealed the dramatic win. Brunson contributed significantly with 36 points, while Anunoby finished with 33.
In the first half, things looked grim for the Knicks as the Spurs surged to a 27-point lead, powered by Victor Wembanyama. However, the Spurs’ shooting turned cold in the second half, allowing the Knicks to outscore them 58-30.
“We got on our heels — we missed some shots,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson remarked on the collapse.
Game 5 will take place Saturday night in San Antonio. No team had previously overcome more than a 24-point finals deficit since Boston’s comeback against the Lakers in 2008.
The Spurs led 81-52 in the third quarter, but the Knicks fought back, even after snapping their 13-game win streak in Game 3. The Spurs’ second-half shooting slumped as they went 3-for-17 from beyond the arc.
Victor Wembanyama recorded 24 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 9-for-25. His struggles in the game contrasted sharply with his team’s strong start. The road teams won the first three games of the finals, an occurrence seen only once before.
Security around Madison Square Garden was tight, similar to Game 3 when former President Donald Trump attended. Taylor Swift’s presence at Game 4 added a layer of celebrity glamor.
The Knicks’ defense was pivotal in the comeback, limiting the Spurs to 14 points in the third quarter and executing a 13-0 run. Dylan Harper added 21 points for the Knicks, while the Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox and Devin Vassell each scored 18.
Court tension rose as Mitchell Robinson committed a flagrant foul against Wembanyama, stirring the crowd. Wembanyama missed two essential free throws late in the game, opening the door for the Knicks’ victory.
