NHL Offseason Highlight: Trade Requests Overshadow Free Agency

1 hour ago 0

The start of the NHL free agency period has taken a backseat due to unexpected trade requests this offseason. Among these requests, Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski’s decision stands out as a significant surprise. Werenski approached General Manager Don Waddell to express his desire to leave, only weeks after securing the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s premier defenseman.

This revelation not only startled the team’s management but also caught his coach, Rick Bowness, off guard. Bowness shared with The Athletic his surprise over Werenski’s trade request. “I’m as shocked as anyone that these came up,” he stated. “At the end of the year meetings, we looked each other in the eye and had great meetings and gave each other a hug leaving, and all that. So everything was good. So when all of this broke, I was shocked and caught off-guard like everyone else.”

Werenski, under contract through the 2027-28 season, isn’t alone in seeking change. Forward Kirill Marchenko also indicated his desire to move on from the team. The news of these trade requests arrived on the heels of a disappointing end to the Blue Jackets’ season, which led to missing the playoffs. Despite the struggles at season-end, earlier parts of the season showed potential improvement for the team. Bowness’s passionate speeches after the regular season might have been expected to inspire the players, yet clearly at least two were not satisfied.

Awarding Werenski the Norris Trophy does enhance his trade market value. If a suitable trade occurs, the Blue Jackets could receive a substantial return for the talented defenseman. The demand for a player of Werenski’s caliber means that any potential deal should benefit Columbus significantly.
