Nico Hoerner’s Remarkable Defensive Play Highlights Cubs’ Game

1 month ago 0

Chicago Cubs’ star Nico Hoerner delivered a highlight-worthy moment with a basketball-style throw during a game against the Houston Astros. While the Cubs faced a 3-0 defeat at Wrigley Field, Hoerner’s defensive skills shone brightly.

During the top of the fifth inning, Astros catcher César Salazar attempted to achieve a bunt single on the first pitch against Cubs’ pitcher Colin Rea. As a response, Hoerner, a celebrated two-time Gold Glove winner, charged toward Salazar’s bunt. Despite Salazar’s impressive speed, Hoerner managed to pick up the ball barehanded, facing limited options.

In a single fluid motion, the 29-year-old Hoerner employed his right leg to create space and astonishingly threw the ball between his legs to first base. First baseman Michael Busch completed the stunning play by catching Hoerner’s throw, securing the out against Salazar.

They say necessity is the mother of invention.

This imaginative and daring play evoked memories of New York Mets’ Bartolo Colon and Chicago White Sox’s Mark Buehrle. Colon made a similar behind-the-back flip against the Miami Marlins’ Justin Bour, while Buehrle once executed a through-the-legs throw despite being hit by a comebacker.

Nico Hoerner’s play is destined to be featured in highlight reels, much like those of Colon and Buehrle. However, it wasn’t enough to spark victory for the Cubs that day, as they struggled to gain traction against the Astros.

The Cubs, with a record of 29-23, aimed to turn the tide in the series finale scheduled for Sunday at 2:20 p.m. ET, hoping to avoid a series sweep against the Astros, who stood at 22-31.
