North Korea May Increase Military Support to Russia in Ukraine Conflict

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday that Russia plans to introduce an additional 30,000 North Korean troops into its campaign against Ukraine. This move, if confirmed, could significantly increase North Korea’s involvement in the war.

In his nightly video address, Zelensky stated, “We also see Russia’s cooperation with North Korea. Russia wants to bring in another 30,000 North Korean troops.” He mentioned that the plans to receive these troops have been in progress since June in Russia’s Voronezh region, as reported by Reuters.

Past Deployments and Military Collaborations

The potential increase in troops follows nearly two years after North Korea initially sent personnel to aid Russia, indicative of a growing military partnership between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Reuters previously reported about the deployment of approximately 14,000 North Korean soldiers to Russia’s Kursk region in 2024 to support the defense against Ukrainian forces.
