Oklahoma State Shocks Oregon in Major Upset
In an unexpected turn of events, Oklahoma State clinched a victory against the sixth-ranked Oregon Ducks, marking the biggest upset of the 2026 college football season. The Cowboys, playing at home in Stillwater, Oklahoma, broke a long-standing losing streak by defeating Oregon 39-31. This win ended the Cowboys’ drought of more than a year without victory, having finished the previous season 1-11 in the Big 12.
Underdogs Defy Expectations
Oklahoma State entered the game as a 24.5-point underdog, coming off a loss to Tulsa in their opening week. This triumph made them the first team in FBS history to end a losing streak of 10 or more games by toppling a top-10 opponent. Head coach Eric Morris expressed immense pride in his players, noting how critics doubted their abilities. Emotionally, he shared, “Everybody counted them out. Told them how bad they were. I’m proud of those kids. This is so cool to be told they’re not good enough, and then they come out and fight for it. So happy for our fans and everybody involved.”
Oregon’s Struggles
Oregon faced significant challenges throughout the game, particularly in the fourth quarter. A crucial fumble by running back Dierre Hill Jr. and missed opportunities, including a failed conversion on fourth and eight, contributed to their defeat. Oklahoma State capitalized by scoring a field goal shortly after.
The offensive game statistics highlighted the disparity between the teams. Oklahoma State amassed 554 yards compared to Oregon’s 281, also doubling their first downs.
“It wasn’t close in a lot of ways,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. “We got our ass kicked in a lot of areas. Credit to Coach Morris and his staff.”
Quarterback Performances
Oregon’s Dante Moore, a potential top pick for the 2027 NFL Draft, had a challenging day. Despite the presence of 20 scouts from 13 NFL teams, Moore managed only five completions for 45 yards in the first half. Although he regained partial form with two touchdowns in the second half, he was outperformed by Oklahoma State’s quarterback Drew Mestemaker.
Mestemaker excelled with two touchdowns and 317 passing yards. His decisive 10-yard touchdown scramble mirrored a notable score in the previous national championship.
“He’s a dog,” Morris said. “That kid never wavered, believes in himself. Made some big-time throws. There’ll be some talk now that he might be the No. 1 quarterback in this year’s class. Phenomenal performance.”
Memorable Moments
Mestemaker shared his pivotal moment saying, “I was like I’m letting it fly. I just leaped and felt like I was in the air for a year, and I landed really hard, but I don’t care, as long as I got in the end zone.”
Oklahoma State’s resilience contributed significantly to their victory. “Everyone on this team has been counted out their whole career; that’s what makes this team special. I believe in these guys. They’re built for these moments.”
Looking Back and Ahead
This game contrasts sharply with last year when Oregon decisively defeated Oklahoma State 69-3. Previously undefeated against unranked opponents under Dan Lanning’s tenure, Oregon’s defeat ended their 12-game road win streak, once the nation’s longest. Weather conditions delayed the game by 90 minutes due to lightning and thunderstorms.
