Oliver Gilbert Wins Democratic Primary in Florida

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert has triumphed in the crowded Democratic primary to replace retiring Rep. Frederica Wilson in Congress. Gilbert is set to represent Florida’s 24th Congressional District, a safe Democratic seat located in South Florida, including part of Miami.

Despite Florida Republicans’ redrawing of the state’s congressional map, the district remains predominantly Democratic, with some coastal areas such as Miami Beach now part of a neighboring district. Wilson, who has served in Congress since 2011, initially represented Florida’s 17th Congressional District before transitioning to the 24th due to redistricting.

Known for her distinctive attire, including brightly colored wide-brimmed hats, Wilson is leaving Congress at the end of the year. Her departure prompted a rush among Democrats to fill the vacancy, with seven contenders entering the primary race. House Democratic leaders have not yet intervened but are expected to support Gilbert, whom Wilson endorsed strongly during a rally, stating, “If I am endorsing you, everybody in District 24 should be endorsing you.”

The primary was competitive but did not feature the high-profile conflicts between establishment Democrats and the far-left that characterized the 2026 midterm season. Across the country, far-left Democrats, often affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), have posed significant challenges, unseating incumbents in some instances.

In Florida, DSA member Oliver Larkin challenged moderate Rep. Jared Moskowitz in a district now favoring Republicans. Meanwhile, Elijah Manley, a self-described socialist, ran against Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz in a majority-Black district reshaped by the GOP’s new map. Wasserman Schultz emerged victorious on Tuesday night.
