‘One Night Only’ Movie Review

In this fictional setting, Congress enforces a law restricting premarital intimacy to one night annually. This idea parallels “The Purge,” but focuses on relationships rather than crime. People must wear sensors to prevent unauthorized encounters, adding a legal twist to personal connections.

New York City singles embrace this limited freedom, turning the night into a festive event. Parties abound, and there’s a celebratory feel in the air as the countdown approaches. Many hope to connect with a soulmate during these precious 12 hours.

Owen, played by Callum Turner, anticipates a special evening with his girlfriend, portrayed by Maya Hawke, only to face disappointment when she reveals her intention to explore new experiences. Meanwhile, Monica Barbaro’s character, Allie, is left alone when her friend chooses another companion at the last minute.

The narrative naturally brings Owen and Allie together through a series of chance encounters. Their paths cross repeatedly, leading to humorous situations and a developing romance.

The film tackles an unusual concept but successfully balances absurdity with charm. Screenwriter Travis Braun debuts with this feature, having previously worked on children’s programming. His script contributes significantly to the film’s appeal.

Will Gluck, known for comedies like “Easy A” and “Friends with Benefits,” manages to highlight the unique universe the characters inhabit. The quest for scarce items like condoms adds layers to the comedic experience.

Callum Turner, recognized for roles in “Masters of the Air” and the “Fantastic Beasts” series, fits his role well, presenting a mix of charisma and humility. Monica Barbaro, also noted for “Top Gun: Maverick” and “A Complete Unknown,” impresses with her portrayal of Allie, especially when showcasing her singing skills.

While “One Night Only” may not reach the heights of classics like “When Harry Met Sally,” it offers engaging entertainment with standout cameos by Molly Ringwald and LeVar Burton as Owen’s mom and her partner.

Comedic scenes extend slightly beyond the ideal length, with some minutes devoted to overtly placed products. A bit of editing could have helped refine the experience.

Ultimately, “One Night Only” provides a playful commentary on modern relationships through its entertaining and sometimes risqué narrative. Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro deliver commendable performances, making the film suitable for a fun date night or home viewing.
