Pastor Matt Olson from First Baptist Church in Sharon, Mississippi, has reportedly surpassed an unofficial world record by preaching for 96 hours. This marathon session stretched from Genesis to Revelation, following guidelines from the Guinness World Records. He took five-minute breaks each hour, accumulating time for longer breaks.
Olson’s achievement outpaced the previous record held by Ananta Ram KC of Nepal, who preached for 90 hours and 2 minutes. Despite choosing not to submit the achievement for official verification, due to high adjudication costs, Olson’s congregation rallied behind his endeavor. They provided medical monitoring, technical support, and continuous prayer.
Olson was inspired by a previous intense 10-day missionary training program, where he endured 96 hours in a simulated hostage scenario without his Bible. Realizing the extent of Scripture he had yet to master, he felt called to preach for the same duration. He shared that the experience demonstrated the sustaining power of Scripture.
The Word of God is truth… and it’s sufficient,” Olson said. “It is what sustained me for 96 hours when, physically, I should not have continued.
While the church followed Guinness World Record guidelines, they refrained from seeking official recognition, focusing instead on the spiritual message. Olson emphasized that the event was not about setting records but about sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Church activities included a rotating medical team to monitor Olson’s health, technical crews for filming, and teams for logistics and prayer. The sermon was livestreamed, and recordings remain accessible on the church’s website. Olson reiterated his commitment to Jesus Christ, stating that all efforts during the sermon were in faith and service.
Olson concluded that Jesus is worthy of every moment of the sermon and every sacrifice made throughout the event.
