Pete Buttigieg Addresses Discontent Among Northwest Indiana Democrats

1 hour ago 0

Pete Buttigieg recognizes the frustration among Northwest Indiana Democrats with the current state of the country. During a stop in Schererville, Buttigieg reassured a room of 275 Democratic volunteers supporting U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan and District 1 State Senate Candidate Scott Houldieson, emphasizing that meaningful change is possible.

Buttigieg noted the strong energy he encountered nationwide. He stated, “People are fed up, but the good news is they have the chance to act in three weeks.” He highlighted how many expected life improvements under the current administration, yet faced increased living costs.

The costs of everyday life, described by Buttigieg, have risen due to specific policies. He pointed to higher grocery prices linked to trade policies and increased rent due to deficit spending. Buttigieg declared, “Everything is more expensive, not from a failed attempt to make it affordable, but from policies that raised costs.” He criticized Republicans for cutting healthcare and increasing food costs, attributing these actions to their focus on tax breaks for billionaires and corporations.

Buttigieg emphasized the importance of addressing gerrymandering. He drew attention to District 1 State Senate Republican candidate Trevor De Vries, noting, “Houldieson’s opponent was motivated to run when redistricting efforts failed, which is just cheating.” He stated, “Republican actions have paved the way for Democrats and anti-gerrymandering advocates to send a strong message.”

In a press conversation, Buttigieg lambasted corporate influence in policy-making, urging Democrats to reaffirm a message against corporate greed. He shared a personal moment with his family, saying, “Good wins when we ensure it does.” He called for persistent effort, “Do you believe we’re going to win? Then prepare to work every single day.”

Houldieson expressed appreciation for Buttigieg’s support, viewing his endorsement as vital for challenging the Republican supermajority. Focusing on local issues, U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan described conversations with farmers affected by rising diesel costs. He presented legislative plans to address concerns with British Petroleum and NIPSCO, asserting, “I can’t do enough to give working families everything, but I can stand with them.”
