Political Endorsements and Election Dynamics Amid Foreign Influence Concerns

Reporter stationed in Mexico City covering Latin America has drawn attention to recent endorsements for Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a Republican from Florida. Three prominent Latin American leaders have recently expressed their support for Salazar. This move has sparked criticism from some Democrats who view it as foreign interference in a U.S. election. Salazar seeks reelection in a district President Donald Trump secured by nearly 15 points in 2024. She has faced backlash for stating that the administration’s immigration policies are excessive. As she campaigns among Latino voters in South Florida, Salazar shared messages of support from right-wing leaders in Latin America, including María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Recently, Salazar also shared a video from Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella endorsing her. He praised Salazar as “Colombia’s best friend in the United States Congress.” Additionally, she received backing from Argentina’s libertarian president, Javier Milei, who endorsed her reelection, stating she comprehends Latin America and stands against “socialist leftists.” These endorsements have sparked condemnation from some Democrats. Gregory Meeks, the ranking Democratic member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, urged Congress to denounce any foreign electoral interference, stating that American elections should remain decided solely by American voters.

Salazar expressed in a statement that Meeks’ criticisms only reinforce the radical socialist agenda her opponent could push if elected. Meanwhile, former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg, a significant Democratic donor, is actively contributing to help reclaim the House majority. Over the past two months, Bloomberg has contributed over $80 million towards the midterms, with potential plans for further donations before Election Day. His funds are primarily directed towards the House Majority PAC and Everytown for Gun Safety, supporting House candidates nationwide.

Bloomberg’s spending aims to increase the margin of victory for Hakeem Jeffries, the House Minority Leader expected to become House Speaker if Democrats regain control. Democrats require only three additional seats to secure the House.

President Donald Trump has confirmed ongoing efforts to secure the release of Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old retired American teacher detained in Russia. Trump stated that the U.S. has been actively working for his freedom. Hubbard, originally from Michigan, was living in eastern Ukraine in 2022 when Russian forces overran the area, leading to his detention. A Russian court convicted him of fighting as a mercenary for Ukraine, sentencing him to nearly seven years in prison. Hubbard’s family disputes these charges, highlighting his pacifist beliefs. The U.S. State Department considers Hubbard wrongfully detained.

An envoy representing Trump plans a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in efforts to negotiate Hubbard’s release. Trump also pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate with Putin, proposing a territorial handover, a move considered defeat by Ukrainian officials.

The Cook Political Report has shifted the stance on two Southern Senate races favoring Democrats. South Carolina moved to “lean Republican” while Mississippi shifted to “likely Republican.” These changes signal competitive races in traditionally Republican strongholds, prompting serious Democratic investments. A new ad campaign targets incumbent Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, contrasting her record with Democratic nominee Scott Colom’s prosecutorial career. In South Carolina, Democrat Annie Andrews challenges Sen. Darline Graham, following Lindsey Graham’s passing. Nationwide, Republicans face challenges related to the economy and international issues. The shift in race ratings indicates Democrats expanding influence into traditionally Republican areas.

In another political development, President Donald Trump committed over $400 million towards the midterms to bolster Republican campaigns. A significant portion has been allocated for advertising and voter outreach. This spending originates from a super PAC named MAGA Inc. and a nonprofit, Securing American Greatness. Trump’s expenditures include initiatives aimed at preventing voter fraud. His contributions reflect a strategic focus on retaining influence in future political endeavors.
