Pope Leo XIV Urges Support for Migrants During Visit Honoring St. Frances Xavier Cabrini

Pope Leo XIV recently visited Sant’Angelo Lodigiano in Italy to honor St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, the first American saint and patron of immigrants. During his visit, Pope Leo emphasized the significance of Cabrini’s work in the context of current global migration issues. He called on Catholics to follow her example, especially due to her dedication to serving migrants seeking better opportunities.

In a recent talk, Leo questioned what Cabrini would advocate today, given her missionary spirit, and referenced Pope Francis’ priorities regarding migrants.

Continuing his consistent advocacy, Leo recently traveled to Spain’s Canary Islands, a key destination for migrants from West Africa. There, he met with migrants and urged world leaders to create safe and legal pathways for migration. He criticized reducing migrants to mere statistics, highlighting their humanity.

Tensions between the Vatican and the Trump administration are notable, with differing positions on migration. Leo insists his remarks are not politically motivated but are based on Catholic values of human dignity, peace, and support for the vulnerable.

Looking forward, the Vatican announced Pope Leo will visit Lampedusa on July 4. This island has significance due to its role as a migration flashpoint and as Pope Francis’ first trip destination as pope in 2013.
