President Donald Trump sent his well wishes to Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday after learning about the pontiff’s lung cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery. Trump’s connection to the pope’s family adds a personal touch to his sentiments.
During a conversation with reporters on Air Force One while traveling from Arizona to Montana, Trump expressed hope for the 71-year-old pope’s recovery following the operation to remove part of his right lung. ‘I want to see Pope Leo get well. It’s a serious issue, having cancer, but the prognosis appears promising,’ President Trump stated. ‘Our love and best wishes are with him.’
Trump highlighted his bond with Pope Leo XIV’s brother, noting their shared support for his administration. ‘His brother and his wife are great friends of mine, big supporters of MAGA, and they have decorated their home accordingly,’ Trump said. ‘He loves his brother deeply, and I want to wish the pope a swift recovery.’
The Vatican had revealed earlier that the pope underwent surgery at Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome. Doctors removed the lower lobe of the pope’s right lung in a 90-minute procedure. The operation reportedly went without any complications.
The diagnosis was confirmed through a tissue examination during the surgery, aligning with prior test results. Pope Leo XIV had previously acknowledged the discovery of a small lump in his lung at an early stage, prompting the recommendation for surgery. After the operation, the pope recovered well and returned to his hospital room, according to the Vatican.
In related news, Pope Leo XIV met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Vatican City last May. President Trump has praised Rubio for his capability in enhancing diplomatic relations effectively.
