Pope Leo XIV, known for his challenging stance against the Trump administration’s immigration policies, marked the Fourth of July in Lampedusa, Italy, a focal point of Europe’s migration crisis. His visit was to honor those who died seeking safety and opportunity in Europe.
While the United States celebrated its 250th Independence Day with festivities, Pope Leo visited Lampedusa to pray at a migrant cemetery and lead a solemn Mass for the community and newcomers. Later, he joined the U.S. ambassador to the Holy See, Brian Burch, in celebrations, receiving gifts like an apple pie and a commemorative baseball. Pope Leo expressed his support for the U.S. soccer team, as highlighted by the Embassy’s social media.
Pope’s Message on Immigration
Pope Leo XIV emphasized the Christian duty to protect human dignity, especially for migrants. His visit recalled the founding of the U.S. by immigrants. In a letter to Americans, he urged them to protect lives, including immigrants, recognizing their dignity and contributions throughout history.
Lampedusa, closer to Africa than Italy, is the main entry point to Europe for migrants from Libya or Tunisia. Pope Leo acknowledged the island’s symbolic significance, urging Europe to address migration with compassion and long-term solutions.
A Call for Compassion
In his homily, Pope Leo praised Lampedusa’s residents for their compassion toward migrants. He called on Europe to fulfill its responsibilities, integrating relief efforts with long-term strategies.
European migration policies stir debate, as nations struggle with border controls while adhering to refugee obligations. Leo’s homily advocated for a comprehensive approach to migration, from immediate aid to sustainable development in migrants’ home countries.
Despite fewer migrants reaching Italy this year, the Mediterranean has seen over 35,000 missing migrants since 2014, with unrecorded shipwrecks likely making the death toll higher. Pope Leo condemned human traffickers and urged European leaders to prioritize human dignity.
Honoring the Dead
Pope Leo laid wreaths at the Lampedusa migrant cemetery, paying tribute to the dead. Eritrean migrant Tareke Brhane commended Leo’s solidarity, noting the lack of a complete registry for deceased migrants.
Pope Leo’s actions mirrored those of Pope Francis, who visited Lampedusa in 2013, criticizing global indifference toward migrants. Despite fewer arrivals, the number of migrant deaths remains troubling, highlighting the continued vulnerability at sea.
Salvatore Sortino of the International Organization of Migration emphasized the significance of Pope Leo’s visit amid ongoing migrant deaths, reinforcing the call for compassion and dignity.
