ProPublica discovered that many states, including Arizona, lack regulations to oversee private schools. For instance, Arizona prohibits the state Department of Education from monitoring private schools. This lack of accountability allows individuals with questionable pasts to manage these institutions. Moreover, private schools frequently operate without the transparency expected of public educational institutions.

Proliferation of Private Schools

Across the country, the number of private schools has climbed significantly. In the last five years, directories from 13 analyzed states recorded an increase to over 9,600 private schools. States are channeling substantial taxpayer funds into voucher programs, increasing accessibility to these schools at a time when student numbers in public districts are declining.

States typically allocate substantial public resources to private schools. Last year, Iowa provided public funding for 99% of private school students. In Florida, an average of 100 new private institutions have emerged each year over the past five years.

Consequences of Limited Regulation

In some states, private schools permit activities that are restricted in public schools, such as corporal punishment or discriminatory admissions policies. As private schools grow, public oversight remains lenient, causing concerns for the future of public education systems.

Florida’s example shows how failure to regulate private school operators can lead to publicized scandals. For instance, individuals with past misconduct have opened private schools, escaping rigorous background checks.

Expansion Encouraged by Political Agendas

Politically, the aim to redirect educational control from public to private institutions has been longstanding among conservative circles. Private school funding has risen alongside new legislative support. Nearly 30 states have introduced voucher-style programs, benefiting over 1.5 million students. Proponents highlight how these initiatives provide access to previously unaffordable private or religious education.

Nevertheless, critics argue that this expansion proceeds without safeguarding student interests or educational quality. The absence of standardized testing and reporting requirements further exacerbates the lack of accountability in private schools.

In Florida, significant lapses in background scrutiny were highlighted by individuals like Lisa Helton and Tara Salute, each having contentious histories yet successfully managing to establish private schools. Despite losing credentials or facing legal repercussions, these individuals continue operating educational facilities without stringent state interventions.

Faced with minimal oversight requirements, private educational operators often escape comprehensive scrutiny, unlike their public counterparts where processes remain comparatively transparent.

A Need for Oversight and Accountability
