Remembering the Legacy of James Burrows, Iconic TV Director

James Burrows, a renowned Hollywood director, passed away peacefully at the age of 85. His family confirmed his death in a statement to People magazine. They celebrated his extraordinary life and enduring legacy, noting his contribution to television over more than five decades.

Burrows was a transformative figure in the television industry. He directed over 1,000 episodes and played a key role in crafting iconic series. Among his achievements were his runs on ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ and ‘Taxi,’ where he garnered his first two Emmy Awards.

Burrows co-created ‘Cheers’ and directed 240 of its episodes, earning six Emmys in the process. He later worked on pilots and episodes for ‘Friends,’ ‘Will & Grace,’ and other popular sitcoms like ‘Two and a Half Men,’ ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ and ‘Frasier.’

The director was celebrated for his understanding that great comedy involves humanity and truth, not just humor. His impact continues to be felt through countless artists and audiences.

Known for his kindness and generosity, Burrows positively influenced those around him, remembered and appreciated by colleagues for his personal engagement and uplifting spirit.

Throughout his career, Burrows earned 11 Emmy Awards and five Directors’ Guild Awards and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2006.

Upon his passing, industry figures like Jennifer Aniston and Debra Messing shared heartfelt tributes. Messing referred to him as a singular talent on ‘Will & Grace.’ Aniston, who worked with him on ‘Friends,’ remembered him as a father figure.

Burrows is survived by his wife Debbie, four daughters, and seven grandchildren. His legacy as a devoted family man and pioneering director will be cherished by those he touched.
