Republicans Use Graham Platner’s Scandals in Maine’s Congressional Race

Graham Platner has exited the political scene, leaving a trail of controversies. These controversies are now leveraged by Republicans against Democrats in a crucial midterm election in Maine.

Former two-term Maine Governor Paul LePage, representing the GOP in the race for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, asserts that Democratic nominee Matt Dunlap made a mistake aligning with Platner. This district is vital in deciding the balance of power in the House. The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) targets this race, aiming to retain its narrow House majority.

“Way too close to Platner. Way too close to Bernie. Way too close to AOC. That whole gang,” said LePage about Dunlap.

Dunlap’s campaign manager Harry Burke calls LePage’s criticism “desperate and weak.” Platner, initially a popular Democrat supported by Bernie Sanders and other progressives, aimed to unseat Republican Senator Susan Collins in a costly Senate race in Maine.

Platner’s campaign ended after an explosive report alleging rape by a former partner. Calls for his withdrawal came from national Democrats following the report. These issues, among others, plagued Platner’s campaign.

Previously controversial online statements and a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol resurfaced, adding to Platner’s challenges. Reports of sexually explicit communications and disturbing behavior further clouded Platner’s reputation.

Platner denied the allegations of violence and claimed his tattoo and online posts were past mistakes.

Republicans aim to use Platner’s controversial past against Democrats in key races, especially those who previously supported him.

“Every Democrat that endorsed Graham Platner endorsed a rapist,” RNC Chair Joe Gruters stated.

Dunlap’s connection with Platner includes endorsing him and joining him at campaign events before the 2026 primary.

“The allegations reported today are serious, and they deserve to be treated with the gravity they warrant,” Dunlap stated, urging Platner to withdraw from the Senate race.

Burke criticized LePage’s attacks, highlighting his move to Florida and tax benefits he claimed there. Burke stated, “LePage might as well start packing his bags for Florida now; these attacks are desperate and weak.”

Democrats question the GOP’s strategy to use Platner’s controversies and assert that voters focus on other issues like affordability.

Communications Director CJ Warnke argues voters care about economic issues and that Democrats aim to improve affordability.

Current political analysis gives LePage an advantage in Maine’s congressional race. Nonpartisan political analysts rank the race as leaning Republican, with Cook Political Report and Inside Elections predicting favorable outcomes for LePage.
