A woman fell overboard and was rescued after spending 20 hours clinging to a lifebuoy in the Ionian Sea. The Hellenic Coast Guard confirmed the rescue.
The 44-year-old Salvadoran was on the Odyssey of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise, sailing near Zakynthos Island. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported this information to USA Today.
The cargo ship MSC Rossella III discovered the woman and alerted the authorities. The Greek Coast Guard provided ropes to pull her to safety after spotting her in the dark waters.
The passenger claimed she deliberately jumped off the ship to disembark. She spent 20 hours at sea according to a Coast Guard representative speaking to Agence France-Presse.
After her rescue, she was taken to Katakolo port and then to a local hospital. There, a prosecutor requested a psychiatric evaluation.
Greek authorities dispatched a Coast Guard vessel and a military helicopter to assist in the search effort.
This incident comes after another event last year. A man jumped off Rhapsody of the Seas in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to escape a $17,000 gambling debt. He survived and was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
