The aftermath of last week’s severe flooding in Nepal has intensified, with the death toll reaching 903 individuals. Additionally, the number of people recorded as missing has surged to 4,247, according to official reports shared on Monday. Among those unaccounted for, 592 are foreign nationals, based on data provided by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority early Monday.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott informed Fox News on Sunday that around 85 Americans remain missing. Rescue operations face significant challenges in reaching devastated areas following the massive flood, originating from a glacier collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border last Wednesday.
Ferrin Cole, serving as an operations director at U.S.-based Crisis Response International, conveyed to NBC News on Sunday, “The disaster here is overwhelming. The flood that descended from the mountain eradicated cities. We are expediting our efforts to provide necessary assistance to affected individuals.” According to reports from the Nepal Red Cross, the disaster has impacted over 90,000 people.
Police in Chitwan district reported to Reuters that local morgues are overwhelmed, noting that more than half of the recovered bodies are largely unrecognizable. Meanwhile, China has documented 16 deaths and 546 missing individuals, including numerous foreigners, in Tibet. The degree of intersection between the Chinese and Nepali missing-person statistics remains uncertain.
Officials in Nepal have confirmed the rescue of more than 10,400 people, which includes 277 foreign nationals. Additional challenges have emerged as a landslide-dammed lake located above the border checkpoint overflows, complicating further response efforts. China’s state media outlet, CCTV, reported on Saturday that while the risk of a complete breach is “relatively low,” heavy rains in Nepal have escalated river levels, prompting renewed warnings for residents living near waterways.
