Rising Heating Costs Challenge Maine Families

59 minutes ago 0

In Freeport, Maine, the Oliver family faces difficult decisions on a $60,000 annual income. Cheryl Oliver shared her dilemma with CBS News, asking, “Am I going to get food this week, or am I going to get gas this week?”

The situation worsened as heating oil prices surged due to rising diesel and gas costs linked to the Iran conflict. In Maine, heating oil soared from $3.34 to $5.97 per gallon, a 79% hike. The Olivers received 100 gallons of free heating oil from a local community center, valued at $700. However, it won’t be enough for winter.

Cheryl Oliver expressed her anxiety, questioning how they would fill their tank and stay warm.

“I was panicking, like, how are we going to fill our tank and how are we going to stay warm?”

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, over 4 million U.S. households rely on heating oil, with 82% concentrated in the Northeast. Tony DiMarco, co-founder of the Freeport Wood Bank, noted the high demand for heating resources. Donations sustain their operations.

DiMarco remarked that many do not realize the impact of doubled heating oil prices on household budgets. The Freeport Wood Bank, one of 17 in Maine, supports around 50 families but may deplete its supplies by mid-winter. This week, DiMarco delivered two cords of firewood to the Olivers, aiding them in conserving heating oil.

For the Olivers, struggling with personal challenges like Chris Oliver’s health issues, this support is vital. Chris Oliver praised the assistance from DiMarco and the wood bank.

“Tony and that place, they’re unbelievable,” he said emotionally. “I don’t know without them if we’d have heat.”
