Los Angeles lost a significant figure on Monday, with the passing of RJ Mitte at the age of 34. Known for his role as Walter White Jr. in the acclaimed series “Breaking Bad,” Mitte was both an actor and a disability rights advocate, sharing his life experiences with cerebral palsy through his work. Authorities confirmed his death at his home in Brownsville, Texas, with an autopsy pending to determine the cause.
Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa announced Mitte’s death, though details of the circumstances remain sparse.
Mitte reached prominence on “Breaking Bad,” where he portrayed the son of Bryan Cranston’s character. His real-life experiences informed his efforts on-screen, bringing depth to the show’s themes of family and physical challenges. Bryan Cranston expressed profound grief, recalling his early encounters with Mitte and his admiration for Mitte’s determination despite dealing with cerebral palsy.
“Born with Cerebral Palsy, he never allowed that challenge to be an excuse for anything,” Cranston remarked on social media. “His commitment to his craft and his life was genuinely inspiring.”
Mitte credited his disability with enhancing his performance skills. In a 2014 interview, he spoke about the unique insight he gained from facing physical therapy and the necessity of adapting to life’s challenges. These experiences enabled him to bring a nuanced perspective to his role in the show.
Originally from Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte’s journey to Hollywood began in 2006. His breakout role came with “Breaking Bad,” which aired from 2008 to 2013, earning the reputation of a cultural touchstone. Cranston reminisced about Mitte’s growth as an actor and their close collaboration over the years.
Mitte’s impact extended beyond acting. His representatives highlighted his dedication to disability awareness, noting his efforts to break down stereotypes and foster inclusion. He contributed to other projects, like the ABC Family series “Switched at Birth” and the series “Guardians of Justice,” and took on production roles in independent films.
An advocate at heart, Mitte served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s and led the Mitte Foundation, which focused on disability-related causes. His commitment to advocacy created a lasting legacy in promoting representation and understanding.
