Rubio Rejects Iranian Toll Proposal for Strait of Hormuz

7 days ago 0

Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed Iran’s proposal to charge ships for passage through the Strait of Hormuz as contrary to international law. Speaking to reporters in Abu Dhabi, Rubio emphasized that no country has the right to impose fees on international waterways.

Rubio’s visit to the Middle East began with his arrival in the United Arab Emirates capital, Abu Dhabi, marking the first of three stops in Gulf Arab capitals. This visit comes as global leaders try to understand the differing accounts from recent peace talks between Washington and Tehran, which concluded in Switzerland.

No country is allowed to charge tolls or fees on an international waterway. That’s existing international law. That’s the way it is in international waterways all over the world, and that’s the way we expect it’ll be here. — Secretary of State Marco Rubio

A memorandum of understanding recently signed by the United States and Iran acknowledges Iran’s influence over the strait. It also stated that Iran and Oman would manage its administration, with a stipulation that no tolls be imposed for 60 days. The memorandum does not clarify conditions beyond this period.

Iran has discussed the possibility of charging ships for transit with Oman. Iranian officials claim these charges would not be tolls but fees for specific services. Shipping experts view this as a mere play on words.

President Trump addressed the issue in a social media post, ruling out any tolls unless imposed by the United States. Rubio did not comment on Trump’s statement.
