SailGP brings a unique, high-speed race to New York Harbor, where high-tech catamarans take center stage. For some, SailGP resembles Formula 1 racing but on water. The U.S. Coast Guard has set up a designated race area to accommodate the event, replacing usual harbor traffic with dynamic racing activity.
The harbor, typically bustling with various vessels, now hosts professional sailboat racers like Nicole van der Velden. Van der Velden, a skilled racer, first visited New York a year ago. She vividly remembers the challenges posed by the harbor’s conditions, including unpredictable winds and strong currents. Despite these obstacles, she contributed to her team, Los Gallos, securing victory at last year’s New York Sail Grand Prix.
As the world’s third busiest port, New York Harbor offers a stunning backdrop for the race. Just before the competition, van der Velden took a moment to appreciate the iconic surroundings—the Statue of Liberty ahead, the Brooklyn Bridge behind, and the famous skyline all around. The experience proved to be both exhilarating and picturesque.
SailGP stands out in a season filled with major sports events in the New York area. These events include the Knicks’ pursuit of the NBA finals and the World Cup in New Jersey. While these take place on land, SailGP captivates audiences from the water. This thrilling sailboat race uses advanced catamarans, which contrast vividly against the world-renowned scenery.
“When people think of a sailboat race, they think of white triangles on a blue background far from shore, slow-paced, hard to understand, elitist,” said Sir Russell Coutts, co-founder of SailGP. “We’ve shortened the races and moved them close to shore where you can see the speed, which is breathtaking.”
SailGP revolutionizes how audiences perceive sailboat racing. Sir Russell Coutts, together with Larry Ellison, established the series seven years ago. They aimed to make the sport more exciting and accessible. The races are now shorter, faster, and brought closer to shore, offering a thrilling experience.
