Samsung Expands Foldable Lineup with Three Distinct Devices

3 weeks ago 0

Samsung’s foldable devices lineup has expanded beyond its original two models, the Fold and the Flip, which it maintained for seven years. At the recent Galaxy Unpacked event in London, Samsung introduced a third foldable device, each catering to different user preferences. This marks a significant shift for the company as they now target three separate consumer needs.

New Approach to Foldables

The latest devices each serve a distinct purpose. The Galaxy Z Fold8 aims at users who consume media heavily. The Fold8 Ultra is designed for professionals needing productivity tools. The Flip8 focuses on those valuing portability and style.

“Seven generations of foldables has taught us consumers need different experiences for different lifestyles,” stated Annika Bizon, VP of Product and Marketing at Samsung UK & Ireland. “The Galaxy Z series is our most complete foldables lineup yet, setting a new standard with our most advanced AI features.”

Understanding Device Differences

The standard Fold8 is Samsung’s lightest Galaxy Z Fold to date, weighing 201g. Its display ratios are optimized for daily content engagement. The cover screen, with a 10:16 ratio, suits quick social interactions, while the 4:3 main display provides a better experience for gaming and video. A 4,800mAh battery and dual 50MP rear cameras support this setup. Priced at £1,699 for the 256GB model, it serves as an entry point to the Fold series.

The Fold8 Ultra is a more advanced option, featuring an 8.0-inch main display, Samsung’s widest on a foldable. Camera capabilities include a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide, and a 10MP 3x telephoto. It also includes a 5,000mAh battery and 8K video capability. This model is priced at £1,899, reflecting its high-spec features, partly due to increased memory chip costs.

In the U.S., the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra have a $200 price difference, presenting a marketing challenge. According to CCS Insight’s Chief Analyst Ben Wood, Samsung must emphasize the Fold8’s unique benefits to justify its price point against the Ultra model.

The Flip8 caters to a different demographic, focusing on slimness and portability. Weighing 180g and unfolding to 6.1mm, it uses an Exynos 2600 chip. The Flip8’s highlight is its redesigned FlexWindow, a 4.1-inch cover display offering AI-native functionality and personalized automation. Priced at £1,149, this device aligns with a lifestyle focus rather than technological expansion.

Broader Market Implications

This release strategy aligns with market forecasts by Counterpoint Research, which predicts a 21% growth in the foldable market by 2026. While Samsung’s market share might decrease to 32% with Apple’s entry into foldables, Samsung’s existing advantages include its product maturity and distribution channels.

Market trends suggest an increase in average selling prices for foldables, with predictions that devices over $1,600 could make up 60% of shipments by 2026. Samsung’s addition of an Ultra tier aims at capturing consumers willing to spend more on premium devices.

Pre-orders for all three devices are available, with full availability starting August 7. Samsung offers a six-month Google AI Pro trial, including 5TB cloud storage. They have updated Smart Switch for seamless iOS transfers, and Quick Share now interworks with AirDrop.

The success of these three foldables hinges on market receptivity. The Ultra’s high-end appeal contrasts with the Fold8’s need to distinguish itself from its more capable sibling. Meanwhile, the Flip8 positions itself uniquely, appealing to those who prioritize lifestyle and portability.
