The Oklahoma City Thunder concluded their regular season with the top record in the NBA, finishing at 64-18. Trailing closely were the San Antonio Spurs with a 62-20 record. Throughout the season, the Spurs proved to be a significant challenge for the Thunder. They managed a 4-1 record against Oklahoma City in regular-season matchups and recently claimed victory in the Western Conference Finals, winning the series 4-3.
In a decisive Game 7 on Saturday night, held in Oklahoma City, the Spurs clinched their spot in the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014 with a 111-103 victory. As the Finals approach, the Spurs are set to compete against the New York Knicks, with the series commencing on June 3.
Despite the loss, Thunder guard Cason Wallace remains unfazed by the Spurs’ performance. During his postgame press conference, Wallace commented, “They’re a good team. Beatable team. Obviously, we beat ’em. We just gotta do things better for a longer period of time.”
This remark quickly spread on social media, sparking a flurry of reactions. One user pointed out the Thunder’s postseason struggles: “Beatable but they beat y’all with no postseason experience.” Another chimed in with, “4-8 vs the Spurs this year. Enjoy Cancun.” A Spurs fan account highlighted the team’s promising future, noting, “They have no idea how much better the Spurs are going to be. Harper and Bryant are only 20! Castle 21! Wemby 22! They have no chance in the future.”
In defense of Wallace, it’s essential to recognize the competitive nature of the series, which reached Game 7. The two teams were evenly matched throughout, evidencing a fierce rivalry. Furthermore, the NBA has seen few back-to-back champions recently, the last being the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018. Asserting the Spurs’ dominance now is as premature as labeling the Thunder a dynasty last season.
