Sara Gilio Shines as Oswego’s Rising Star

1 hour ago 0

Last season, Sara Gilio of Oswego faced challenges on the varsity level as a sophomore. She dealt with a fractured foot during the season but has made significant progress since then.

This year, as a junior outside hitter, Gilio is rapidly advancing statistically. She is catching up with Hannah Herrick, a Dayton recruit, creating a dynamic duo for the Panthers. Gilio noted, “Hannah has always been somebody that I looked up to. We’ve played together since we were young. Competing with her is amazing.”

Both players contribute greatly to the team’s success. Gilio expressed excitement about being able to compete alongside Herrick, especially considering Herrick’s college plans. On Tuesday night, Gilio led both teams with seven kills and served four aces, contributing to Oswego’s 25-12, 25-12 victory over Oswego East.

Herrick also showcased her skills with five kills and four aces. Ashley Crouch led Oswego East with three kills, while Tori Vlcek added two more.

Last season, Gilio’s foot fracture cost her a month off the court. She returned just before the playoffs but wasn’t back to her usual form. Oswego coach Gary Mosley said, “She did what she could at that point. Watching her now, she’s in a good groove. Her mindset is awesome.” For many athletes, confidence plays a key role in performance.

Gilio commented, “It’s confidence. Being a sophomore last year was hard, but it’s easier now as a junior. Knowing I belong here boosts my confidence.” The improvement is evident—Herrick leads the team with 191 kills, and Gilio closely follows with 174.

Mosley sees statistical evidence of Gilio’s comfort on the field. Herrick also observed Gilio’s progress, saying, “I love playing with her. Helping her out is great, whether through shots or emotional support.” Herrick acts as a mentor, having gone through the college recruiting process. Gilio is still uncommitted but in talks with some coaches.

Gilio appreciates Herrick’s support, saying, “She’s someone I can always talk to. We share the same work ethic.” During a Southwest Prairie Conference match, Gilio excelled at the service line, serving five consecutive points for Oswego, including three aces, helping establish a lead in the second game.

Mosely admires Gilio’s progress, noting her coachability and humility. “She’s staying hungry and aggressive. It’s beautiful,” he remarked. Gilio’s potential is boundless, and Mosley believes she can reach Herrick’s level. He confidently stated, “Her ceiling is up to her. Someone will discover her as a hidden gem.”
