Senate Majority Leader John Thune recently addressed the Republican Party’s approach to fundraising challenges for the 2026 midterm races during an interview. He discussed concerns about maritime tensions with Iran and provided insights on the confirmation process for Todd Blanche as attorney general, noting the narrow voting margins in the Senate.
In Minnesota, Republican voters selected their nominee for the state’s 1st Congressional District. Incumbent Representative Brad Finstad was chosen, winning against challengers Gregory Goetzman and Oliver Morlan in the Republican primary. Goetzman had previously contested Finstad in 2024, with limited success, while Morlan participated as a newcomer from an industrial cleaning business background.
Minnesota’s 1st District, one of four Republican-held seats in the state’s eight U.S. House districts, covers southern Minnesota, including Rochester and agricultural areas. Rep. Finstad will compete in the November general election against either Alex Eaton or Jake Johnson, the Democratic primary candidates. Eaton has a background as a math teacher and union leader, whereas Johnson is a small business owner and considered more progressive.
The Cook Political Report currently ranks this race as ‘lean Republican,’ reflecting changes from the previous ‘solid Republican’ classification. This shift mirrors Minnesota’s increasing inclination towards left-leaning ideals, particularly in urban centers.
Rep. Finstad has been serving since a special election in 2022, following the death of Republican Rep. Jim Hagedorn. Hagedorn passed away after battling kidney cancer and contracting COVID-19. Prior to Hagedorn, the district was represented by Democrat Tim Walz, who became governor in 2018 and recently declared he would not seek reelection.
Throughout the upcoming general election, agriculture, health care, manufacturing, and the economy are anticipated to be key issues. The outcome will determine the political representation for southern Minnesota in the U.S. House.
